It’s a sad day in baseball. One of the most controversial players of our time, and the current home run all time leader, is facing up to 30 years in federal prison for allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice. Apparently, while the federal government was investigation the BALCO steroid scandals, Bonds lied during his testimony to a grand jury.

Being a person who loves our legal system, lying to a grand jury is just plain stupid. Grand juries offer you immunity from prosecution when you testify. Most grand jury cases are sealed and aren’t made public record. Being a citizen of a country where you can absolve yourself by telling the truth, I think it’s morally reprehensible that Bonds may have lied to a federal grand jury.

Innocent until proven guilty, is the old adage. We’ll wait and see what comes next.

According to MLB.com and other sports insiders, Arod is going to be re-signing with the Yankees within the framework of a $275 million dollar deal for 10 years. There’s also a performance clause which would pay him substantially more if he broke Barry Bonds record while in pinstripes.

Now being the Yankee fan I am, and my proximity to New York, it’ll be great to be able to get to a ballpark where I can see him break that little cheater Bonds record. BUT… I’m extremely disappointed in Scott Boras and Arods actions during the World Series. They overplayed their hand, thought the market would be great for Arod. Guess again; Arod had to come crawling back to the Boss.

I’m glad I don’t have to burn my Arod jerseys now, but it’ll take me a couple of years to get back to respecting him as a man and player again.

Yet another email sent on to me by my co-workers. I think they’re hinting that I should at least consider some of these steps. I think my management skills are pretty well rounded. But then again, I thought the Yankees would dominate Cleveland during the Division Series. Boy was I wrong!

The short and sweet of it:

1. Spend timeĀ  developing your people
2. Get to know what your staff really does
3. Don’t do it for them
4. Know the business and make sure they know you
5. Treat communication as a busy, fast-moving, two-way street
6. Encourage everyone to work as a team
7. Provide feedback regularly and let employees know what you want
8. Hire well
9. Understand best IT practices but don’t just make them buzz words
10. Be a good project manager
